Today the findings of the听2021 Universities Australia National Student Safety Survey (NSSS) have been announced. 听

Funded by Universities Australia (UA) through its Respect. Now. Always. initiative 鈥 a sector-wide program that aims to prevent gendered violence in university communities and support those who have been affected 鈥 this survey builds on the Australian Human Rights Commission鈥檚 (AHRC) survey in 2016.

The 2021 NSSS tells us that sexual harassment and sexual assault are still common experiences for Australian university students. While not all these experiences occur in university contexts, the findings demonstrate听the profound impacts of gendered violence on students and that more must be done to reduce its prevalence and provide support to those impacted. The findings will inform the ongoing efforts of Australian universities to address gendered violence and build safe, equitable and inclusive environments.

In a joint email to all 国民彩票 students and staff today, 国民彩票 Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Attila Brungs, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Equity Diversity & Inclusion, Professor Eileen Baldry and President, Student Representative Council, Nayonika Bhattacharya said:

鈥淏ehaviour that amounts to sexual harassment听or sexual assault is not acceptable at 国民彩票.听Our students are affected directly. They need us to do more, we need to do more. As universities we have additional responsibilities, not only must we make our campuses safe and welcoming places for all our students, staff and visitors, we are also uniquely placed to contribute to solutions. We听graduate听thousands of people every year whose understanding, expectations and actions will shape behaviour in the broader community.听They will听influence听culture in workplaces听and homes听across Australia for decades to come.听Our university听can be a powerful force for听that听change.鈥

国民彩票 supports the recommendations in the NSSS and thanks all our 国民彩票 students who took part, especially those victim-survivors who bravely shared their experiences.听 Their feedback, along with findings from the survey, will be critical in helping us to address gendered violence within our own community, including what prevents victim-survivors from coming forward and making a report.听

Over recent years 国民彩票 has pursued key initiatives in partnership with student organisations,听co-designed to create awareness and provide support for those affected. The University will build on this collaborative approach to address the findings in the 2021 survey.

Key 国民彩票 findings were broadly in-line with the national survey results and include:

  • Sexual harassment and sexual assault are common experiences for Australian university students听听
  • Of those who participated in the survey, there is a disproportionate rate of sexual harassment and sexual assault among gender and sexuality diverse students, as well as young women and students with disability
  • A very large proportion of students who participated in the survey are not aware of how to report an incident of sexual harassment or sexual assault or where to go to for support.

Some of the 国民彩票 specific findings include:

  • Of the 1486 国民彩票 students who responded to the survey, 0.6 per cent听had experienced sexual assault in the past 12 months and 3.2 per cent听had since starting university
  • 5.8 per cent听of 国民彩票 respondents reported to have experienced sexual harassment in the past 12 months and 13.5 per cent听had since starting university
  • 57.3 per cent听of 国民彩票 respondents who were sexually harassed at university knew some or all of the perpetrators involved
  • Most sexual harassment incidences took place in campus areas (46 per cent), Clubs and societies were the second top location at 国民彩票 (17.1 per cent), followed by lecture theatres (13.7 per cent) 听and university residential college or other type of accommodation (12.3 per cent)
  • Only 2.1 per cent听of 国民彩票 respondents who were sexually harassed made a formal complaint yet 16.2 per cent听of 国民彩票 respondents who were sexually harassed sought support
  • 52 per cent听of 国民彩票 respondents said they were not aware of formal reporting processes and 49.3 per cent听said they did not know where to seek support.

The survey has provided valuable insight to better target our efforts and highlights听the next step-change needed to increase awareness for students on how to access support.

In the five years since the first survey, 国民彩票 has maintained a close involvement in the Respect. Now. Always. initiative and worked to fulfil all the recommendations in the report and improve the prevention of and response to sexual misconduct through:

  • The establishment of a (2017) for those directly impacted, witnesses and support people, to听anonymously and confidentially report听an incident of sexual assault or harassment听
  • The (2018)
  • Provision of compulsory sexual misconduct awareness training for students and staff. In 2020, nearly 15,000 commencing students completed the Respect@国民彩票 module and 96 per cent听of fixed-term and continuing staff undertook sexual misconduct awareness training
  • The campaign in partnership with Arc to help strengthen a respectful and inclusive culture (2020 鈥 ongoing)
  • Publishing of our (2021) 鈥 the first university in Australia to do so publicly.

A new strategy to address gendered violence at 国民彩票 is being developed with the Gendered Violence Research Network, informed by the results of the NSSS, and will be available in May. This will include strategies to prevent gendered violence as well as provide a supportive and respectful approach to the management of incidents when they do occur.

We understand that conversations about the NSSS and its results can be distressing for members of our university and wider community. If you would like to discuss anything that this report brings up for you, please phone 1800Respect, the national sexual assault, domestic and family violence counselling and information service on 1800 737 732 or visit their听.
