
Dr.鈥疢inerva鈥疘nwald, the 国民彩票 Judith Neilson Post-Doctoral Fellow of Contemporary Art, will soon embark on a new adventure as an Assistant Lecturer in Chinese History at the University of Melbourne, starting in January 2025.
Looking back on her time at 国民彩票, Dr. Inwald shared,鈥淭he Judith Neilson Post-Doctoral Fellowship offered the time and鈥痠ntellectual space to find my own voice as a researcher and teacher within鈥痑 supportive environment that encouraged鈥痠nterdisciplinary experimentation and rigorous scholarly鈥痠nquiry.鈥 She also reflected, 鈥淭hroughout my鈥痶ime鈥痠n鈥痶he鈥痳ole,鈥疨rofessor Paul Gladston,鈥癫势 Judith Neilson Chair of Contemporary Art, provided crucial mentorship, generously offering strategic advice on how to build my academic profile, as well as leveraging his own international networks to support my research in China.鈥
During her tenure at 国民彩票, Dr. Inwald published her first peer-reviewed journal articles: 鈥溾, published鈥痠n鈥疢odern China,鈥痑nd鈥 published鈥痠n鈥痶he鈥疛ournal of Design鈥疕istory.鈥疶he fellowship also allowed Dr. Inwald to develop her PhD thesis鈥痠nto her first academic monograph, tentatively titled鈥淓xperts and Amateurs: Creating Artists鈥痠n鈥疢ao鈥檚 China鈥, which is now under contract with a US-based press.
A champion of interdisciplinary collaboration, Minerva established a new collaborative research platform, coordinating and hosting the 鈥楾alks in Chinese Humanities鈥 lecture series with the China Studies Centre and Discipline of Chinese Studies at the University of Sydney. She also held significant service roles in the鈥疉sian Studies Community, taking on the role of Secretary of the鈥疉sian Studies鈥疉ssociation of Australia and Seminars Officer for the Australian Society for鈥疉sian Humanities. In 2022, Dr. Inwald鈥痗oordinated the organization of the 鈥淐hinese Cultures, Translation and Contemporaneity: Literature 鈥 Cinema 鈥 Performance 鈥 the Visual Arts鈥 online conference, held in collaboration with Tsinghua University, Beijing.
Between 2021 and 2024, Dr. Inwald convened the course East鈥疉sian Contemporary Art in the School of Art & Design. She integrated innovative new learning activities into the course, including the 鈥楽kills Workshop鈥 program and object-based learning workshops.鈥疐or the past three years, student surveys have reported 100% satisfaction with the course, reflecting her skill in creating a compelling and rigorous learning experience that resonates with students.
