What drew you to ¹úÃñ²ÊƱ Food Science Program, and how did it align with your career goals?
I was drawn to the ¹úÃñ²ÊƱ Food Science program because of its strong focus on research-driven innovation and industry relevance. I graduated as a veterinarian and wanted to change my career by pursuing food science and technology. The program aligned perfectly with my career aspirations by equipping me with advanced knowledge in food microbiology, fermentation, and biotechnology—areas that are crucial for my work in both academia and the food industry.
Was there a specific experience here that shaped your career path? If so, what was it and how did it shape your career path?
My master’s degree and PhD research at ¹úÃñ²ÊƱ were pivotal experiences that shaped my career. The academic and administrative staff were incredibly friendly and approachable, always ready to answer my queries. Without a doubt, my PhD supervisor, played a key role in helping me make the most of these opportunities. His guidance, flexibility, and support enabled me to complete my PhD program successfully, even without a scholarship, and helped me navigate the challenges along the way.
What skills from the program do you use most in your current role?
The program equipped me with both practical and soft skills that I use daily. My technical knowledge in food science, fermentation, and biotechnology, as well as my ability to analyze complex data, are central to my role as a Senior Research Scientist. Additionally, the communication, project management, and collaborative skills I developed have been crucial in my career, particularly when working with multidisciplinary teams.
How did the program help you overcome career challenges?
The comprehensive training at ¹úÃñ²ÊƱ, coupled with hands-on industry exposure through internships, research, and field trips, strengthened my resilience and problem-solving abilities. This research-driven approach to tackling complex food science challenges has enabled me to navigate obstacles in my career, whether it's developing novel food innovations or overcoming research setbacks.
What advice would you give students wanting to follow a similar path?
I would advise students to focus on building a solid foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of food science. Passion for what you study is key, don’t try to appear 'cool' or pressured to follow trends. Seeking research and internship opportunities, as hands-on experience is invaluable. Also, stay adaptable and open to new ideas, as food science is a fast-evolving field full of opportunities for innovation.Â
