Angelica Mesiti is one of Australia鈥檚 most celebrated contemporary artists working across video, performance, and installation. She splits her creative annual calendar between Paris and Sydney, having residences and studios in both cities.
Mesiti has become best known for video works that use cinematic conventions and performance languages as a means of responding to personal histories and specific environments. Recent projects, including the internationally acclaimed,聽Citizen鈥檚 Band听补苍诲听The Colour of Saying, focused on traditional music, dance performance, narrative, the ballad, and oral storytelling traditions.
Mesiti鈥檚 creative energies have been applied to working as a solo practitioner, a member of an artist collective, and as a founding member of an artist-run initiative.
Her solo projects include the C3West commission聽The Begin-Again聽through the MCA and Hurstville City Council, and shows at 24Hr Art Darwin, Gallery 9 Sydney, and Broken Hill Regional Gallery. Mesiti is a member of the award-winning performance group, The Kingpins, who have exhibited and performed in museums nationally and overseas including: The Mus茅e d鈥橝rt Modern de la Ville de Paris; Liverpool Biennial, UK; The Palais de Tokyo and Nuit Blanche-Paris; Contemporary Art Centre,聽Vilnius, Lithuania, and Zacheta National Gallery of Art,聽Warsaw;聽Transmodern Age Festival, Maryland, Baltimore, USA; Gwangju Biennale, South Korea, Taipei Biennale, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and SuperDeluxe, Tokyo.
Mesiti was also a founding member of the Sydney-based artist-run initiative Imperial Slacks, where she curated the two-part video publication聽Serial 7鈥檚.听
